How to Use SFTP with FileZilla

Transferring files securely between servers is essential for maintaining data integrity. SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) provides a secure method to exchange files over a network. 1. Download and Install FileZilla: 

  • Visit the official FileZilla website (https://filezilla-project.org/) and download the appropriate version for your operating system.
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

2. Launch FileZilla and Access Site Manager:

  • Open FileZilla and click on “File” in the top left corner.
  • Select “Site Manager” from the drop-down menu. A new window will appear.

3. Configure New SFTP Connection:

  • In the Site Manager window, click on the “New Site” button on the left side.
  • Name your site.
  • In the “Host” field, enter the server’s IP address or domain name.
  • Set the “Port” to 22 (the default SFTP port).
  • Choose “SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol” as the protocol.
  • Select “Require explicit FTP over TLS” under Encryption.

4. Enter Credentials:

  • Choose the “Logon Type” as “Normal”.
  • Enter your SFTP username and password in the respective fields.
  • If you have an SSH key, select “Key File” under “Logon Type” and provide the path to your private key file.

5. Connect to the Server:

  • Click on “Connect” in the Site Manager window.
  • FileZilla will establish a connection to the SFTP server using the provided credentials.

6. Transfer Files:

  • Once connected, you will notice a dual-pane interface.
  • The left pane represents your local machine, and the right pane represents the remote server.
  • Navigate to the source file in your local machine’s pane.
  • Double-click the destination folder in the server’s pane.
  • Drag and drop the desired files from the left pane to the right pane for uploading.
  • To download files from the server to your local machine, drag and drop files in the reverse order.
